English for Academic Purposes
The common academic skills required for assessment can be developed with the aid of the English for Academic Purposes series.
You can join these hybrid workshops in-person at SLSC Building or online as a wonderful method to hone your academic English skills.

Introduction to Academic Writing
This workshop will help you work on your assessment effectively and efficiently. If you’re often unsure about where to start or what to focus on when you begin an assessment, this workshop is for you! During this workshop, you will learn methods for:

- Understanding your task or question
Project basedAcademic Writing
Researching and writing about a particular subject or activity are key components of project-based academic writing.
Using the right language
This workshop offers guidance on composing high-quality academic writing, understanding the criteria for assessment by markers, and enhancing clear and effective communication of ideas.. The workshop will cover:
- How to write precisely and concisely
- How to write clearly
- How to connect claims and evidence using language
Reading Effectively
Through planning, taking notes, researching, and maintaining focus, this program gives participants the practical skills they need to read effectively and widely . You will:
- Learn methods for reading efficiently
- Develop your skills in identifying relevant information in your reading
- Learn methods for retaining and noting what you read
Paraphrasing & quoting with Endnote
This class offers a thorough grasp of paraphrase with an emphasis on its definition, importance, and practical application. During this workshop, you will:
- Learn the difference between quoting and paraphrasing
- Learn when to quote and when to paraphrase
- Practice your paraphrasing in a safe and low-pressure environment.
How to use EndNote session
UMB students can learn how to manage references, improve their paraphrasing and referencing abilities, and practice entering citations with EndNote, a free program, during this drop-in workshop.
